There are many reasons why you might need to get CEREC crowns. These are dental caps that can cover your tooth if it has become broken or decayed. You might also get a crown for aesthetic reasons, such as whitening it. Getting a crown has traditionally been a time-consuming process, but there are new advances today. Keep reading to learn more about CEREC crowns.

What is a CEREC crown?

Instead of having several dental appointments for one crown, patients can now get them on the same day. This type of crown can help patients’ self-esteem improve immensely. It can also bring a patient’s smile back to its former brightness. CEREC means Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.

In this method, the dentist will use CAD/CAM, which is a computer-aided design or manufacturing. In this manner, the dentist will be able to create a crown to fit on the damaged tooth. First, images are taken of the teeth to create a digital model. Then the equipment will create a CEREC crown from a block of ceramic material. The dentist will program it, so it matches the natural teeth better. This happens in only one dental appointment.

Traditional crowns vs. CEREC crowns

The process of getting a traditional dental crown usually requires multiple appointments for the patient. A traditional crown might be made out of metal, porcelain fused to metal or zirconia. The dentist will take an impression of the tooth after preparing it. This will be sent to a lab, where the crown is made. Then the crown will be sent back after two weeks.

All of the types of CEREC crowns are made out of ceramic. The crowns can be used for teeth that are broken, misshapen, or severely decayed. The dentist will take X-rays of the patient’s teeth and prepare the tooth. The tooth will be filed down and then digital images will be taken of the teeth. An intraoral scanner is used for this process.

The CAD/CAM machine will receive the images. This allows the machine to create a digital model of the patient’s teeth. Then a dental restoration is made to fit the digital model. Once the restoration is ready, it is sent to a milling machine to create the crown from a block.

The entire process takes only about 15 minutes or less. The dentist can then polish or shade the crown. That way, the color can better match the teeth. The dentist can then cement the finished crown to the patient’s teeth. It is unlikely that the patient will need to return to the dentist’s office.

Visit a dentist for CEREC crowns

As you can see, this type of crown offers several advantages to you. By choosing a crown that can be made in a single day, you can avoid multiple dental trips. That way, you will be able to continue enjoying a wide range of foods. Contacting a dentist today will help you learn more information about this type of crown.
