Proper Oral Hygiene Is Effective for Stopping Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are a common symptom that many people experience. You might assume you are brushing your teeth correctly and that you have healthy teeth. Because you think your oral hygiene routine is okay, you may ignore your bleeding gums. But this is an important sign that all is not well. If you do not pay attention to this and other signs, you may go to your next dental appointment and be in for a surprise.

Selecting the right tools to combat bleeding gums

Good oral hygiene only requires a few simple tools. People are more likely to maintain healthy gums with a good toothbrush and floss. Some people also benefit from an antiseptic mouthwash. Using these hygiene tools makes them effective and keeps gums oral healthier.

The right toothbrush for proper brushing

A toothbrush with hard bristles can irritate the gums and cause them to bleed. If the toothbrush is uncomfortable or causes sores to happen along the gumline, a person is less likely to use it properly. Even a soft toothbrush can be a problem if the person applies too much or not enough pressure. Many dentists recommend electric toothbrushes because these toothbrushes clean consistently.

Flossing daily and other tools

Dentists recommend that people floss at least once a day. Ideally, people should floss after every meal. Flossing helps to remove food particles that the bristles of a toothbrush cannot reach. The dentist can show the most effective way to floss. At first, when people floss, they can get discouraged because it might make the gums bleed. But as people build a strong flossing routine, the gum sensitivity will improve, and flossing will reduce bleeding gums.

Some patients use a mouthwash as part of an oral hygiene routine. Diabetic patients especially can benefit from an antiseptic mouthwash. After brushing and flossing, rinsing the mouth with a mouthwash will remove the loosened particles and help rinse away biofilm. Regular checkups with the dentist are also important. The dentist can perform a deep clean and help remove the plaque and tartar buildup that causes bleeding gums.

What happens with poor oral hygiene

Bleeding gums are an early symptom of gum disease. Other symptoms include puffy gums. In later-stage gum disease, the teeth can loosen and even fall out. There is a direct link between untreated gum disease and serious issues like heart disease and diabetes.

Say goodbye to bleeding gums

It is possible to reverse gum disease and improve bleeding gums. Changing oral hygiene habits is an effective way to improve and even eliminate your symptoms. The dentist’s office is the right place for advice on how to find the correct tools and use them properly to improve your oral hygiene. Bleeding gums are not a normal side effect of tooth brushing and are a sign that something is amiss. Oral oral health is an essential part of your overall oral health. You should discuss symptoms like bleeding gums with your dentist at the first opportunity.
