What Procedures Can an Emergency Dentist Do?

An emergency dentist is a dentist who treats emergencies. Many emergency dental offices have hours on weekends and holidays, and some operate through the night. The main goal in the emergency office is to provide relief to patients who have an immediate need.

They can schedule, diagnose, and treat patients within the same day as the emergency. While some dental offices may have difficulty scheduling patients quickly, the point of emergency care is to be prompt.

Emergency dental services

Unfortunately for many patients, a dental issue does not always occur when they see their primary care dentist. Toothaches and emergencies can occur on weekends, holidays, and in the middle of the night. Signs that a patient needs an emergency appointment include:

  • Severe pain
  • Persistent bleeding
  • Signs of an infection

Any time a dentist's prompt treatment can alleviate severe pain, save a tooth, or help stop an infection, it may be an emergency.

Emergency examinations

During an emergency exam, the dentist examines the patient's problem area. Patients may require x-rays of their mouth to see the full extent of their problem. In an emergency dental exam, the dentist's primary goal is to diagnose the issue, alleviate pain, and recommend treatment. In some instances, patients can expect treatment to follow the examination, whereas others may require antibiotics for an infection and a hold on treatment until the infection clears up.

Tooth fillings

Fillings can repair teeth with decay or trauma. Sometimes bacteria can gather on the edge of a filling and cause it to loosen or fall out. Likewise, trauma and teeth grinding can cause the filling to fall out. When patients lose a filling, the tooth becomes vulnerable to bacteria and infection. Often, patients show up in an emergency dentist's office due to a lost filling when the pain becomes severe. An emergency dentist can provide emergency fillings to patients who need them.

Tooth extractions

In some instances, an emergency dental appointment may require an extraction. If a patient experiences persistent bleeding or suffers a broken or loose permanent tooth, it may require an extraction. Other signs of urgent problems include an injured jaw and severe toothache. For patients who have lost teeth, an emergency dentist may replace them within three minutes of losing them.

Implant repairs

Implants are typically so strong that patients would have a difficult time damaging them. When patients suffer from implant damage, it tends to be because of forceful trauma, such as being hit with a thrown object during a sport's match or falling onto a hard surface. Damage to an implant can become progressively worse when not treated. In some instances, the dentist can use composite material to make repairs to the implant.

Conclusion

Emergency dentists provide vital care to those who need it as soon as possible. When patients arrive in an emergency dental office, they receive prompt diagnoses and treatments to alleviate pain and prevent further damage to their teeth or overall oral health.
