What sets KöR apart is its refrigerated gel. Most whitening gels begin to degrade at room temperature the moment they are manufactured — losing peroxide potency before they are ever used. KöR gel is refrigerated from manufacture through delivery to our office, which preserves its full strength at the time of application. The result is a gel that can penetrate deeper into enamel tubules than room-temperature alternatives.

KöR is the only professional whitening system with a documented clinical track record for treating tetracycline staining — the dark gray or brown banding caused by antibiotic exposure during tooth development. The Zoom process uses a hydrogen peroxide gel activated by a specialized blue LED light. Over three 15-minute cycles in the dental chair, the light accelerates the peroxide’s penetration into enamel. Most patients leave with teeth that are eight to ten shades lighter than when they arrived.

The trade-off is sensitivity. Zoom tends to produce more post-treatment sensitivity than KöR or Opalescence, particularly in the 24 to 48 hours following treatment. Opalescence formulas include potassium nitrate and fluoride. Potassium nitrate actively calms nerve endings inside teeth during the whitening process, which means patients experience significantly less sensitivity than with other systems. The fluoride component strengthens enamel and reduces the likelihood of post-treatment sensitivity. For patients who have tried whitening before and stopped because of discomfort, Opalescence is often the system that finally works for them.

Opalescence Boost is the in-office version — a chemically activated (not light-activated) 40% hydrogen peroxide gel that whitens in about 45 minutes without the UV exposure of a light-based system. Opalescence also offers take-home custom tray formulas in a range of peroxide concentrations, allowing patients to choose a shorter daily wear time with a higher concentration or a longer overnight wear with a lower concentration.
