Juvéderm in Pompano Beach, FL

Reviewed by Dr. Nicole M. Berger, DDS — South Florida Smile Spa, Pompano Beach, FL

Juvéderm in Pompano Beach at South Florida Smile Spa is administered by Dr. Nicole M. Berger, a dentist, and that shapes how it is used. Juvéderm® is a family of hyaluronic acid fillers that restore volume and smooth lines; in a dental office it is used most around the mouth, where the smile lives: thin or uneven lips, the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth, the folds that pull the corners down, and the hollows that make a new set of veneers or a smile makeover look unfinished. This page explains which Juvéderm products do what, what a visit involves, how long results last, and when a filler is not the right answer.

Quick answer

Juvéderm® is a smooth hyaluronic acid gel injected beneath the skin to add volume and soften lines; hyaluronic acid is a substance the body already makes, and the filler is gradually absorbed over 6 to 18 months depending on the product and the area. At South Florida Smile Spa in Pompano Beach, Dr. Berger uses it for lips, smile lines (nasolabial folds), marionette lines at the corners of the mouth, vertical lip lines, chin and jawline definition, and cheek volume, most often to frame a smile makeover or veneers. The gel contains lidocaine, so the injections are comfortable; a visit takes 30 to 45 minutes, results are visible immediately, and swelling settles in a few days. It can be dissolved if needed, which makes it adjustable and reversible.

What It Treats

Why a dentist offers Juvéderm

A filler replaces volume that time, weight change or tooth loss has taken away, and the lower third of the face is where dentists work every day. Teeth and lips support each other: worn or missing teeth let the lips and corners of the mouth fall, and a new smile can look incomplete if the frame around it is not addressed.

  • Lips. Subtle volume, a sharper border, or evening out a lip that is thinner on one side. Dr. Berger shapes lips to the teeth behind them, so a new smile is framed rather than hidden.
  • Smile lines and marionette lines. The folds from the nose to the mouth and from the mouth corners toward the chin deepen as cheek volume drops and as back teeth wear or go missing. Filler softens them and lifts the corners.
  • Vertical lip lines. The fine lines above the upper lip, often paired with a small dose of Botox to stop them re-forming.
  • Cheeks, chin and jawline. Restoring cheek volume lifts the lower face, and a little filler in the chin or along the jaw improves profile, especially after years of a collapsed bite.
  • Finishing a smile makeover. After veneers or a smile makeover, filler balances the lips and the lines around the mouth so the whole face matches the new teeth.

Juvéderm products are FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers, and the FDA’s page on dermal fillers is a good plain-language summary of what they are and the questions to ask any injector. Facial filler is an accepted part of dental practice in Florida when provided by a trained, licensed dentist, and Juvéderm in Pompano Beach at our office is planned alongside your dental care.

The Process

What a Juvéderm visit involves

  1. Consultation. Dr. Berger reviews your medical history and medications, looks at the face at rest and in a full smile, and looks at the teeth and bite, since worn or missing teeth are often why the lower face has lost support. Goals and realistic results are agreed before anything is injected.
  2. Product and plan. The product is chosen for each area and the amount is set, usually conservatively, since filler can be added at a follow-up. Photographs are taken for comparison.
  3. Numbing. The skin is cleaned and a topical anesthetic applied. For lips, a dental block, the same numbing used for a filling, makes the treatment painless; the gel itself also contains lidocaine.
  4. Injection and shaping. The gel is placed with a fine needle or a blunt cannula and gently molded. Most areas take 15 to 30 minutes, and the result is visible immediately.
  5. Settling and review. Expect some swelling, and sometimes a small bruise, for two to five days, more with lips. Avoid pressure on the area, heavy exercise and alcohol for 24 hours. A two-week review checks the result and adds a touch-up if an area needs balancing.

Juvéderm in Pompano Beach for lips and the smile frame

Lips are the most requested area and the one where a dentist’s eye matters most. The upper lip should show two to four millimeters of the upper teeth at rest and sit just at the gumline in a full smile; a lip that is too thin exposes too much tooth and gum, and one over-filled hides the teeth entirely and reads as unnatural. Dr. Berger plans lip filler to the teeth behind it, which is why patients finishing veneers or Invisalign often add it as the last step. Volbella gives a subtle, defined result; Ultra gives more volume. A dental block makes the treatment painless, swelling peaks the next morning and settles over a few days, and the final shape is judged at two weeks. Lip filler typically lasts nine to twelve months.

Smile lines, marionette lines and the collapsed lower face

The folds beside the mouth deepen for two reasons: the cheeks lose volume and slide down with age, and the lower face loses height when back teeth wear down, are lost, or an old denture has settled. A dentist sees the second cause constantly. Filler placed directly in a smile line softens it; filler placed higher, in the cheek, lifts the fold from above and often does more with less. Marionette lines, which pull the corners of the mouth down and make a face look tired or stern, respond well to a small amount of Vollure or Ultra at the corners. When tooth wear or missing teeth are the underlying cause, Dr. Berger will say so, because restoring the bite with crowns, implants or a full mouth reconstruction restores facial height in a way filler cannot, and filler then finishes the result rather than papering over it.

Juvéderm or Botox?

They do different jobs and are often used together. Botox relaxes the muscles that create lines by movement: frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and the jaw muscles behind clenching. Juvéderm fills lines that are present at rest and replaces lost volume: lips, smile lines, cheeks, chin. Vertical lip lines are the classic combination, a little Botox to quiet the muscle and a soft filler to smooth the line. Dr. Berger will tell you at the consultation which you need, and if the honest answer is neither, for example when the real issue is worn teeth or a gummy smile that needs crown lengthening, she will say that too.

Safety, side effects and who should wait

Hyaluronic acid fillers have a long safety record, and one advantage over other fillers is that they can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) if a result needs adjusting. Common side effects are swelling, tenderness, redness and bruising for a few days, and occasionally small lumps that settle or are massaged out within two weeks. The serious risk, filler entering a blood vessel, is rare, and it is why precise anatomical knowledge and conservative technique matter; Dr. Berger places filler slowly, in small amounts, with the lower face anatomy she works in daily, and keeps hyaluronidase on hand. Filler is not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over an active skin infection or cold sore, or to patients with certain autoimmune conditions or a history of severe allergy, and blood thinners, aspirin and fish oil increase bruising, so bring a list of what you take. Dental work and filler are spaced apart, since dental infections can affect filler, which is one more reason to have both planned by the same clinician.

Cost and insurance

Juvéderm is priced per syringe, and the cost of a visit depends on the product and how many syringes the plan calls for: lips are usually one syringe, smile lines one to two, cheeks two or more. Filler is cosmetic and is not covered by dental or medical insurance. You receive a written estimate at the consultation, before anything is scheduled, and when filler is part of a smile makeover it is built into that plan. Treatment can be combined with a hygiene, whitening or cosmetic visit to save a trip.

Why patients choose South Florida Smile Spa for Juvéderm

  • Lips planned to the teeth. Dr. Berger shapes lips and the smile frame around the teeth behind them, so the result looks like you, not like filler.
  • Truly painless. A dental block, the same numbing used for a filling, is available for lip treatment; few injectors can offer it.
  • The cause is addressed. If worn or missing teeth are collapsing the lower face, you hear that first, and filler finishes the result rather than hiding the problem.
  • Conservative and reversible. Small amounts, a two-week review, and hyaluronidase on hand if anything needs adjusting.
  • One visit for everything. Juvéderm and Botox can be added to a cleaning or cosmetic appointment, in a private, spa-style setting.

Patients come for Juvéderm from Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Coconut Creek, most often to finish a cosmetic dental plan, and often after being over-filled elsewhere and wanting a subtler result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dentist do lip filler?

Yes. Licensed dentists with the required training provide facial fillers for the lips and lower face, and they bring something most injectors lack: they plan the lips around the teeth behind them and can numb the lips completely with a dental block. Dr. Berger uses Juvéderm for lips, smile lines, marionette lines, cheeks, chin and jawline.

How long does Juvéderm last?

It depends on the product and the area. Lips and smile lines typically last 9 to 12 months, Vollure up to 18 months in the folds, and Voluma up to 24 months in the cheeks. Areas that move a lot, like the lips, break filler down faster. Results are immediate and fade gradually as the gel is absorbed.

Does it hurt?

Very little. Every Juvéderm XC product contains lidocaine, the skin is numbed with a topical cream first, and for lips Dr. Berger can give a dental block so the area is completely numb. Afterward, expect tenderness and swelling for a few days rather than pain.

Will my lips look overdone?

Not when filler is planned conservatively and to your teeth. Over-filled lips hide the teeth and look unnatural; Dr. Berger starts with a modest amount, usually one syringe, shapes the lip to show the right amount of tooth, and adds at the two-week review only if needed. Hyaluronic acid filler can also be dissolved if you ever want it reduced.

How much swelling should I expect, and when can I go out?

Swelling peaks the morning after and settles over two to five days; lips swell the most. A small bruise is possible, especially if you take blood thinners, aspirin or fish oil. Most patients go back to work the same day and look settled within a week, so plan filler at least two weeks before an event.

What is the difference between Juvéderm and Botox?

Botox relaxes muscles to soften lines caused by movement, such as frown lines and crow’s feet, and to calm clenching. Juvéderm adds volume to fill lines that are present at rest and to shape lips, cheeks and chin. They are frequently combined, for example Botox and filler together for vertical lip lines.

Can filler be reversed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, within minutes to a day, which Dr. Berger keeps on hand. It is one of the reasons hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm are preferred over permanent fillers.

Is Juvéderm covered by insurance?

No. Filler is cosmetic and is not covered by dental or medical plans. It is priced per syringe, and you receive a written estimate at the consultation before anything is scheduled. When it is part of a smile makeover it is included in that plan.

Do you see patients from outside Pompano Beach?

Yes. Patients come for Juvéderm and Botox from Lighthouse Point, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek and across Broward County, and treatment can be added to a cleaning or cosmetic visit. The office is at 572 E McNab Rd, Suite 102, Pompano Beach. Call (954) 785-1100 or request an appointment.
