Same-Day Dentistry in Pompano Beach, FL

Reviewed by Dr. Nicole M. Berger, DDS — South Florida Smile Spa, Pompano Beach, FL

Same-day dentistry in Pompano Beach at South Florida Smile Spa means that the treatment which used to take two or three appointments and a few weeks of waiting is finished in one. A crown is designed, milled and cemented while you wait. A broken front tooth is rebuilt before you leave. A toothache is diagnosed and treated in the same visit instead of being scheduled for next week. This page explains which treatments we do in a single visit, how the technology makes that possible, what still needs more than one appointment and why, and how to get a same-day slot when something has gone wrong.

Quick answer

Same-day dentistry is treatment completed in a single visit, made possible by digital scanning and in-office CEREC milling, which let Dr. Berger design and make a porcelain crown, inlay, onlay or veneer in about two hours instead of sending an impression to a lab and fitting a temporary. At South Florida Smile Spa in Pompano Beach, same-day treatment includes crowns, chipped-tooth repairs with bonding, fillings, routine root canals with the crown placed the same visit, in-office whitening, nightguard and mouthguard scans, and emergency care for toothaches, broken teeth and lost crowns. Implants, orthodontics and full reconstructions still take several visits, because healing and planning take time no technology can shorten.

Same-Day Crowns

How a crown gets made while you wait

The traditional crown takes two visits, a gooey impression, a temporary that comes off at dinner, and two to three weeks at a lab. The same-day version replaces all of that with a scanner and a mill in the next room.

  1. Prepare the tooth. Under local anesthetic, decay and old filling are removed and the tooth is shaped. About 30 minutes.
  2. Scan. A small camera takes a 3D image of the tooth and the bite in a couple of minutes. No impression material.
  3. Design. Dr. Berger designs the crown on screen, matching the shape of the original tooth and the way it meets its neighbors. You can watch.
  4. Mill. The CEREC mill carves the crown from a solid block of color-matched ceramic in about 15 minutes, and it is glazed and fired for strength.
  5. Fit and bond. The crown is tried in, the bite adjusted, and it is bonded permanently. You leave with the finished tooth, about two hours after you sat down.

The American Dental Association’s page on crowns explains what a crown does; our dental crowns page covers materials and cost.

Why It Works

Is a same-day crown as good as a lab crown?

  • Same materials. The ceramic blocks the mill carves are the same lithium disilicate and zirconia the labs use, and long-term studies show the same survival rates as lab-made crowns.
  • Better fit, often. A digital scan has no impression distortion, and the dentist who prepared the tooth designs the crown with the tooth in front of her instead of a technician working from a model.
  • No temporary. Temporaries leak, come off and let bacteria at the prepared tooth for weeks. Skipping that stage means less sensitivity and fewer failed crowns.
  • One numbing, one visit, one day off work. For most patients this is the point.
  • When the lab still wins. Front teeth where a hand-layered porcelain match matters, bridges of several units, and implant restorations still go to our lab, and Dr. Berger will tell you when that is the better choice.

Same-day emergency care

A toothache that keeps you up, a tooth broken on a popcorn kernel, a crown that came off over the weekend, a swelling in the gum: these are seen the same day you call whenever we can manage it, and the aim is to leave with the problem treated, not just diagnosed. A cracked molar gets a same-day crown. An abscessed tooth gets a root canal started and the pain gone, usually with the crown placed in the same visit. A lost crown is re-cemented or remade on the spot. The things that cannot be finished the same day, such as an extraction, which our periodontist performs on scheduled days, are made comfortable with medication and a protective dressing until then. Our emergency dentist page explains what to do for each kind of emergency before you reach us.

Same-day cosmetic fixes

Not every smile improvement needs a treatment plan. A chipped corner, a small gap, a worn edge or a discolored old filling on a front tooth can usually be fixed with dental bonding in under an hour, with no numbing and no second visit. In-office whitening lifts teeth several shades in about ninety minutes, which is why patients book it the week of a wedding or an interview. A single discolored or misshapen tooth can be restored with a milled ceramic veneer or crown the same day. For a full smile makeover with multiple veneers, the lab’s hand-finished porcelain is still the better route, and that takes two visits.

Doing more in one visit

Same-day dentistry is also about fewer visits overall. Patients who travel for work, who come from out of town, or who simply hate the dentist’s chair can ask for treatment to be grouped: two crowns in one morning, a cleaning and a filling in the same appointment, or a quadrant of fillings under one numbing. For longer sessions, sedation lets a whole plan be completed in one or two comfortable visits instead of six short ones. Tell us when you book that you would like to consolidate, and we will build the schedule around it.

Cost and insurance

A same-day crown is billed exactly like a conventional crown, under the same insurance code, and is covered the same way, typically at 50 percent after the deductible. There is no surcharge for the technology, and you save a second visit and a temporary. Fillings, bonding, root canals and emergency exams are covered under their usual categories. Our team verifies benefits before treatment and tells you what you will owe; for emergencies that is done while you are in the chair.

Why patients choose South Florida Smile Spa for same-day dentistry

  • The mill is in the building. CEREC scanning and milling on site, so a crown is designed by the dentist who prepared the tooth and placed two hours later.
  • Honest about what is same-day. You are told up front what will be finished today and what needs a lab or healing time, and why.
  • Emergency time held daily. Toothaches, broken teeth and lost crowns are seen and treated the same day whenever possible.
  • Visits consolidated on request. Multiple treatments grouped into one appointment, with sedation available for long sessions.
  • No technology surcharge. A same-day crown costs and is covered the same as a conventional one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a same-day crown take?

About two hours from sitting down to leaving with the finished crown: roughly 30 minutes to prepare the tooth, a few minutes to scan, 15 to 20 minutes of design and milling while you wait, and the rest for glazing, fitting and bonding. Two crowns in one visit take about three hours.

Is a same-day CEREC crown as strong as a lab crown?

Yes. It is milled from the same lithium disilicate or zirconia blocks the labs use, and studies over more than ten years show the same survival rates. The fit is often better because there is no impression distortion and the dentist designs it with the tooth in front of her. For some front teeth where hand-layered porcelain gives a better color match, Dr. Berger will still recommend the lab.

Can I get a root canal and crown in one visit?

For routine cases, yes. The root canal is completed, the tooth is built up, scanned, and a milled crown is placed in the same appointment, so the tooth is protected immediately rather than left with a temporary filling for weeks. Teeth with curved or calcified canals, or retreatments, are referred to an endodontist and the crown follows afterward.

Can I be seen the same day if I have a toothache or a broken tooth?

Usually, yes. We hold time each day for emergencies. Call when we open and describe the problem; a cracked tooth, lost crown or abscess can typically be seen and treated the same day. Extractions are scheduled with our periodontist, but the pain is controlled the same day.

Does same-day dentistry cost more?

No. A same-day crown is billed under the same code and covered the same way as a conventional crown, and you save the second visit, the temporary and the time off work. Fillings, bonding, whitening and emergency visits are priced as they always are.

What cannot be done in one day?

Anything that depends on healing or tooth movement: dental implants need three to six months for the bone to fuse, Invisalign moves teeth over months, and a full mouth reconstruction is planned in phases. Multi-unit bridges and most veneer cases go to the lab for hand-finished porcelain. The restorations placed on top of implants are often same-day once the implant has healed.

Can I have several treatments in one appointment?

Yes. Tell us when you book that you want to consolidate, and we will group crowns, fillings and a cleaning into one longer visit. For long sessions, nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation keeps you comfortable, and many patients complete a whole plan in one or two visits that way.

Can I get my teeth whitened the same day?

Yes. In-office whitening takes about 90 minutes and lifts most teeth several shades in that visit, with custom take-home trays to maintain it. A cleaning beforehand gives the best result, and both can be done the same morning if you ask when booking.

Do you see patients from outside Pompano Beach?

Yes. Patients come for same-day crowns and emergency care from Lighthouse Point, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek and across Broward County, and out-of-town patients often ask to consolidate visits. The office is at 572 E McNab Rd, Suite 102, Pompano Beach. Call (954) 785-1100 or request an appointment.
