What is Oral Cancer?

Cancer is caused by unusually high cell growth. These cells are invasive. They damage the tissue they grow through. Cancer can spread quickly and are dangerous. The places oral cancer appear are:
  • The Lips
  • The tongue
  • Inside Lining Of The Cheeks
  • The Palate, Hard & Soft
  • Salivary Glands
  • Inside The Throat
  • Underneath The Tongue, Floor Of The Mouth
  • Teeth & Gums
People with a history of smoking or consuming alcohol are at a higher risk. As well, exposure to a virus called human papillomavirus, specifically the strain, HPV-16is linked to several subsets of oral cancer. Sun exposure can also increase risk and increasing age, oral cancer is most often detected in persons 40 years of age and older. Dr. Nicole M. Berger is highly trained in oral cancer detection and wants her patients to know should the worst happen she is always available to assist you. It is important that everyone gets regular check-ups.

How is Oral Cancer Detected?

Here are some physical symptoms you can look out for:
  • Mouth Sores, Red Or White, That Do Not Heal For More Than 2 Weeks
  • Unusual Lumps
  • Pain or Numbness
  • Difficulty Eating and Drinking
  • Strange Colors in your Mouth
If you have experienced any of these symptoms be sure to let your doctor know. Your information can really help Dr. Berger and the rest of our office identify problems before they get worse. As stated before those who drink alcohol and smoke are at a higher risk for Oral Cancer but we want you to rest assured that we are here for you and will use all available protocols for a proper diagnosis. We are here to provide you with the proper oral cancer screenings and any necessary treatment.After speaking to you about your history and listening to your oral complaints, Dr. Berger will give you an in-depth examination. Our oral exam will take no longer than 5 minutes. Using a light for illumination and magnifying eyewear Dr. Berger will inspect your mouth for any irregularities.Here are some signs we look for:
  • Specific Lesions (Red and white lesions are the most suspect)
  • Lumps in the Soft Tissue
  • Stiffness in the Jaw
  • Swelling of the Jaw
Once your exam is complete Dr. Berger will analyze and document anything that she finds. If there is any need for concern she will compassionately explain the situation and schedule you a follow up. If you are at risk we will do our best to make sure that you receive the care necessary to rectify the situation.
