Reviewed by Dr. Nicole M. Berger, DDS — South Florida Smile Spa, Pompano Beach, FL
Oral surgery in Pompano Beach at South Florida Smile Spa covers the procedures that happen below the gum line: removing teeth that cannot be saved, rebuilding bone and gum so that implants and restorations have something solid to sit on, and treating gum disease that cleaning alone cannot reach. The surgical work is done in our own office, with the same records and the same plan as the rest of your treatment, and with nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation available for every procedure.
Quick answer
South Florida Smile Spa provides oral surgery in Pompano Beach including tooth extractions and wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting and sinus lifts to prepare for dental implants, gum grafting for recession, pocket reduction surgery and crown lengthening for periodontal disease, and biopsy of suspicious spots in the mouth. Extractions and surgical procedures are performed by our periodontist at South Florida Smile Spa; Dr. Nicole M. Berger, DDS plans the restorative side of every case and provides the sedation. Every surgery is planned from a 3D CBCT scan, and IV sedation given in-house is available for any of them.

Oral Surgery
What oral surgery means in a general dental practice
Most dental treatment works on the parts of a tooth you can see. Oral surgery works on what holds the teeth in place: the bone of the jaw, the gum that covers it, and the sockets that implants and new teeth depend on. It is rarely a procedure on its own. Nearly every surgery here is one step inside a larger plan, which is why it is done in the same office, from the same scan, as the restorative work that follows.
Oral surgery at South Florida Smile Spa falls into four groups:
- Removing teeth that are broken, infected or impacted, including wisdom teeth.
- Rebuilding bone where it has been lost, so that an implant can be placed securely.
- Treating and repairing gum: reducing deep periodontal pockets, covering exposed roots, and reshaping gum and bone so a tooth can be restored.
- Diagnosing tissue changes with a biopsy when a spot, patch or lump in the mouth does not resolve on its own.
Our oral surgery services in Pompano Beach
Each procedure has its own page with what it involves, what recovery is like and what it is usually paired with.
- Tooth extractions. Simple removal of teeth that are through the gum, and surgical removal of broken, impacted and wisdom teeth. Sedation is available, and the replacement tooth is planned before the extraction so bone is preserved.
- Bone grafting. Rebuilding jawbone that has shrunk after tooth loss or gum disease, most often in the socket at the time of extraction or as a ridge graft before an implant.
- Sinus lift. Adding bone beneath the sinus floor in the upper back jaw, where bone is often too thin for implants after molars have been missing for a while.
- Gum grafting. Covering roots exposed by recession to reduce sensitivity, protect the root from decay and stop the recession from progressing.
- Pocket reduction surgery. For periodontitis that persists after scaling and root planing: the gum is folded back, the roots and bone are cleaned, and the gum is repositioned so the pockets are shallow enough to keep clean.
- Crown lengthening. Reshaping gum and bone to expose more of a tooth, either so a crown has enough tooth to hold onto after a fracture or deep decay, or to correct a gummy smile.
- Oral pathology and biopsy. Evaluation of white or red patches, ulcers that do not heal within two weeks, lumps and other changes found at an exam or an oral cancer screening, with a biopsy sent to a pathology lab when needed.
- Reconstructive surgery. Combinations of the above, such as rebuilding a whole ridge after multiple extractions ahead of an All-on-4 arch or a full mouth reconstruction.
Who performs the surgery
Extractions and surgical procedures, including implant placement, grafting, sinus lifts, periodontal surgery and wisdom teeth, are performed by our periodontist at South Florida Smile Spa, in our Pompano Beach office, on scheduled surgery days. Dr. Berger plans the restorative side of every surgical case: what the implant, crown or bridge will be, where it needs to sit, and therefore where bone and gum need to be. She also provides the sedation. Both work from the same 3D scan and treatment plan, so you see the same team before, during and after, and nothing is lost between offices.
How a surgical visit is planned
- 3D imaging. A cone beam CT scan shows bone height and width, the sinus floor, the nerve canal in the lower jaw and any infection, in a way a flat X-ray cannot. Every graft, implant and surgical extraction here is planned on it.
- Medical review. Blood thinners, diabetes, osteoporosis medication, smoking and recent surgery all change how a procedure is planned. We coordinate with your physician where needed. Dr. Berger has written a guide to medications before dental sedation.
- Your comfort plan. Local anesthetic for everything; nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation on top of it, chosen with you. IV sedation is given and monitored by Dr. Berger, who holds a Florida conscious sedation permit, and is the usual choice for longer or multiple procedures.
- The procedure, with the restorative steps that follow already scheduled.
- Written aftercare and a review visit. Most surgical sites are checked at about one week and again when the next phase is due.
Recovery, in general
Recovery depends on the procedure, and each service page gives specifics, but the pattern is similar. Expect swelling that peaks around the second or third day and then settles, a soft diet for a few days, and discomfort that is usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief, with a prescription for larger procedures. Stitches dissolve or are removed at about a week. Grafts need the longest: the bone matures over three to six months before an implant can be placed in it. The American Dental Association’s patient guidance on anesthesia and sedation describes the sedation options used for these procedures.
Cost and insurance
Fees depend on the procedure, the number of sites, the sedation you choose and whether graft material is used, and you receive the exact figure after the exam and scan, before anything is scheduled. Extractions and most periodontal surgery are covered in part by dental insurance; some procedures, including impacted wisdom teeth and biopsies, may also be covered under medical insurance. Our team checks both and submits the claims, and monthly financing is available for the balance. When surgery is one phase of a larger plan, the whole plan is quoted together so you can see what each stage involves.

Care in Pompano Beach
Why patients choose South Florida Smile Spa for oral surgery
- Surgery and restoration under one roof. The periodontist and Dr. Berger work from the same scan and the same plan, so the implant goes where the crown needs it, not the other way around.
- IV sedation in-house. No separate surgical center and no second set of records; the sedation is given here by Dr. Berger.
- 3D planning as standard. Cone beam imaging for every graft, implant and surgical extraction.
- Saving teeth is considered first. Root canal treatment, crowns and periodontal therapy are all done here, so surgery is recommended when it is the better option, not the only one available.
- Judgment-free. Many surgical patients have avoided the dentist for years. That is the starting point of the conversation, not a problem with it.
Patients come to us for oral surgery from Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Coconut Creek. If you have been told you need surgery elsewhere and want a second opinion on the plan, bring your X-rays and we will review them with you.
If you have been told you need oral surgery
A consultation starts with a 3D scan and a conversation about what the surgery is for and what comes after it. You leave with a written plan, the sedation option you have chosen, and the cost before anything is scheduled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to go to an oral surgeon, or can my dentist do it?
You do not need to go anywhere else. Extractions, implant placement, bone and gum grafting, sinus lifts, periodontal surgery and wisdom teeth are all performed by our periodontist at South Florida Smile Spa, in our Pompano Beach office. Dr. Berger plans the case, provides the sedation and completes the restorative work. Cases that need a hospital setting or a maxillofacial surgeon, such as jaw fractures or orthognathic surgery, are referred.
Is oral surgery painful?
Not during the procedure: the area is fully numbed, and sedation is available on top of that. Afterward, expect soreness and swelling that peak around day two or three and then improve, managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relief. Each service page describes the recovery for that procedure.
Can I be asleep for oral surgery?
IV sedation, given and monitored by Dr. Berger, keeps you deeply relaxed and most patients remember little or nothing of the procedure, while still breathing on their own. It is not general anesthesia, which we do not provide; cases that truly require it are referred to a hospital setting. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are the lighter options.
Why do I need a 3D scan before surgery?
A cone beam CT shows the width and height of the bone, the position of the nerve in the lower jaw and the sinus in the upper jaw, and infection that a flat X-ray can hide. It lets the procedure be planned precisely and reduces surprises during surgery. The scan takes under a minute and uses a low radiation dose.
How long does bone take to heal after a graft?
The gum over the graft heals in one to two weeks. The grafted bone matures over about three to six months, depending on the size of the graft, before an implant can be placed into it. A sinus lift is at the longer end of that range.
Can an implant be placed at the same time as the extraction or graft?
Sometimes. If there is no active infection and enough bone, our periodontist can place the implant immediately after removing the tooth, and small grafts can be placed around an implant at the same time. Larger grafts and sinus lifts usually need to heal first. The CBCT scan decides which applies.
Do you take medical insurance for oral surgery?
Dental insurance covers most extractions and periodontal surgery in part. Some procedures, including impacted wisdom teeth and biopsies, may also be covered under medical insurance. Our team checks both plans before treatment and submits the claims.
What should I do before a surgical appointment?
Tell us about every medication and condition, including blood thinners, diabetes and osteoporosis medication, and do not stop anything without checking with us. If you are having oral or IV sedation, follow the fasting instructions and arrange a driver. Avoid smoking before and after surgery, because it slows healing and raises the risk of dry socket and graft failure.
Do you see patients from outside Pompano Beach?
Yes. Patients come for oral surgery from Lighthouse Point, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek and across Broward County. The office is at 572 E McNab Rd, Suite 102, Pompano Beach. Call (954) 785-1100 or request an appointment.
